Business cards still exist. At conferences, business meetings, first sales. But the use has evolved: instead of the customer typing your data into the phone afterwards (and forgetting 80% of the time), they scan a QR and your contact is saved directly to their address book, with name, phone, email, company, website, everything already filled in.

This QR is called a vCard QR — the vCard 3.0 or 4.0 format encoded in QR Code. Works natively on iPhone and Android — taps "Add contact" and that's it.

This article shows: how to create, which fields to include, simple vCard vs Plus (with photo/social), card size and best practices.

Simple vCard vs vCard Plus

Simple vCard = direct contact to address book. Accepts: name, surname, title, company, phones, emails, address, website, notes. Works offline.

vCard Plus (also called "Smart Business Card" or "Digital Card") = QR points to a landing page with your profile. Page has photo, bio, links to Instagram/LinkedIn/WhatsApp, "Add to contacts" button. It's dynamic QR — you update the landing without reprinting the card.

Aspect Simple vCard vCard Plus
Where the data is In the QR itself In a URL
Works offline ✅ Yes ❌ Needs internet
Can update without reprinting ❌ No ✅ Yes
Shows photo ❌ No ✅ Yes
Includes social links (Instagram, LinkedIn) ⚠️ As note ✅ As buttons
Tracks views ❌ No ✅ Yes
Cost Free Paid plan (~$5-15/month)

For most people: simple vCard already solves. For professionals who change role/company or want robust digital identity (consultants, external salespeople): vCard Plus is worth the investment.

How to create simple vCard (5 minutes)

  1. Go to Code2Scan vCard QR generator.
  2. Fill in the basic fields:
    • Full name
    • Title / role
    • Company
    • Phone (with country code)
    • WhatsApp (if different from phone)
    • Email
    • Website / LinkedIn
    • Address (optional)
  3. Download QR as SVG (for quality printing) or PNG (for digital use).

vCard Plus (professional version)

Works like this: you create a hosted profile page (code2scan.com/v/yourname or your own domain). That page has photo, bio, networks, action links. The QR points to this URL.

Advantages:

  • Update without reprinting: changed jobs? Update the page. The 200 printed cards keep pointing to the new profile.
  • Photo + visual identity: customer sees your face before adding. Reinforces memory.
  • "Save contact" button: vCard download via the button. Same UX.
  • Tracking: how many people saw your profile this month, from which city, what time.
  • Social links: 1 tap to open your LinkedIn, Instagram, WhatsApp.

Set up: create your vCard Plus. Basic plan includes 1 profile; bigger plans allow profile for the whole team (external salespeople, consultants).

Where to put the QR on the card

3 layouts that work:

Layout 1: QR on the back

Front: name, title, company, visual contact (phone, email).
Back: QR taking up 50-60% of the area + text "📱 Scan to add".

Advantage: card looks traditional on the front. Recommendation: standard card (3.5 × 2 inches), QR minimum 1in.

Layout 2: QR next to the name (front)

Small QR (0.8in × 0.8in) on the side, next to the identity. Balances classic card with modernity.

Layout 3: minimalist (just QR + name)

Front: name + big QR (1.5-2in).
Back: empty or just one corporate phrase.

More modern. Works for freelancer, designer, consultant.

Minimum QR size on the card

Business card is scanned at 30cm. Rule: 30 ÷ 10 = **3cm minimum (1.2in)**. Recommended: 3.5-4cm to give some margin.

Don't go below 2.5cm (1in) even in super clean layout. Below that, mid-range Androids fail to read.

Best practices

✅ Include only professional data

Don't put personal phone, home address, personal email. Card circulates in unknown hands.

✅ Use email from own domain

[email protected] is more professional than [email protected]. If you don't have one yet, create domain + email for ~$6/month.

✅ Standardize phone format

+1 555 123-4567 (international format) works better than (555) 123-4567. International customer can call directly.

✅ Include WhatsApp if you serve via it

Today WhatsApp is more used than traditional phone for commercial prospecting in many markets. Put both.

❌ Don't include all 12 phones you have

Clean card > complete card. 1 phone, 1 WhatsApp, 1 email. Max.

❌ Don't use personal photo in simple vCard

vCard 3.0 supports photo encoded in base64, but that explodes the QR size. Use vCard Plus if photo matters.

Comparison: traditional card vs vCard QR

Traditional With vCard QR
Customer receives and takes home ⚠️ Forgets in 30 days ✅ Saves contact instantly
Content update ❌ Reprint everything ✅ Update in dashboard (Plus)
Usage metric ❌ Zero ✅ Sees who viewed (Plus)
Printing cost $0.10-0.30 per unit Same (QR is free)
Customer typing effort High (10-15 seconds) Zero
